Excerpt: ... of the history of the State which made me more than ever proud of it, more than ever anxious to contribute my feeble efforts to its strength and progress; and I learned from him what I have often since had occasion to verify, that while New York pours out the treasures of her commerce eastward, she pours out a healthful influence upon civilization and legislation westward. In spite of defects in our legislation and legislators, no thoughtful man will dispute the fact that the great lines of legislation in the State of New York have been ever tending toward improvement, and no one knows anything of the Western States who does not know also that what has been done here for better laws, has served as a stimulus and example for all the States of the West and Northwest. But there are other lines represented here than mere geographical frontiers. As I look %mong you I see old friends and neighbors, true American citizens, indeed, men as loyal to American ideas as any others, but of Teutonic stock. It is a pleasure-to me to meet them always, but an especial pleasure to meet them to-night; for if there is anything which I have at heart in the new duties which are entrusted to me, it is to strengthen any bonds of connection, and to weaken any causes of estrangement which may exist between Germany and the United States. It is probably known to most of you, that within the last ten years a considerable reaction has taken place in the views of many thoughtful men in Germany as regards the United States.
