Excerpt: ... which he gives fuch Encomiums of, as are eafier to him the Practice of it, but do not recommend it half fo effectually as his own Sincerity would. After his Flourish about Truth, he returns to Ireland, that has furnifhed him with fo many Difcoveries where it lay all this while, and appeals to that Kingdom to fhew, that the Lower Houfe Claims are as agreeable to fence and Order as they are to Right and Truth. But, by his leave, I do not think there can be yet any fufficient Evidence of that. The Practice there, is as yet very new, and has been hitherto difregarded by the Bifhops in great Meafure, not approved as he fays. And there is great Reafon to think, that this Writer having anfwered fo much for them, without any of their Confents, for ought that appears, and againft fomc of their Minds, will oblige them to look into thefe things a little more narrowly, and not fuffer Queftions, in which they arc fo nearly concerned, to be determined without them. One Bifhop of that Kingdom, I am fure, upon the firft Application made for a Convocation to be affern bled in Ireland, exprefTed himfelf in a Letter, dated JuJj j, 170$, to one here in England, very apprehenfive of the Confequences of it, in thefe Words: If it be granted, J par, the Example of. yours there, would have too great an Influence upon our Lower Houfe here; and as Experience has fhewn that he was not miftaken, fo there is Reafon to think, that more of his Bre. thren are of his Mind. However, this Writer aflures us, that the Bijbops there, for this their wife and Fatherly Conduct, Pag have met with all the Returns of Reverence and Obedience that touidpoffiblj be paid them; which is as true, as moft of his other Affertions.
