In the foregoing chapters an attempt has been made to discuss those instincts and other fundamental tendencies which lie at the base of some of the most important issues in business management and in the production and maintenance of the kind of workeffort which is to the fullest advantage of the employer and the employee. As I stated above, I have not written a comprehensive work on the psychology of the instincts, for there are a few other instinctive tendencies which do not directly affect the business relationship as such, and in the treatment of those tendencies which have been discussed a balance has been struck between scientific precision and the practical purpose of helping a body of men whose training and outlook in this matter are not predominantly technical. Throughout the.treaiment one of the main aims has been to show that[by utilizing the instincts which each possesses as the most important part of his heritage, the biggest problems of management can be solved by the quiet, unreasoned appeal, which, ifproperly made, is unerring and lasting in its effect. ] This does not mean that man is reduced to the lower animal level, for such a course is undesirable and impossible. Man is a rational being, and the fullest use of his rationality must be permitted; yet this is no reason why the determining force of many activities should not be the instinctive needs of life.
