In the Letter which Mr. King has addressed to me by way of preface to his "Examination of Milner's History of the Fourth Century," he says, "Both you and Mr. Rose, "seem now rather shy of your First Letter, and dissatisfied "with me for not having noticed, sooner than I deemed it to "be necessary, the contents of your second." p. 7. I do not know on what ground he says this respecting either of us. As it regards myself, he may have been deceived by some false appearance, though I cannot imagine what it can have been. My publisher will, I am sure, vouch for me, that as soon as I learned that the first edition had "been sold, I printed a second; and I will thankfully print, and reprint it, to supply Mr. King gratuitously with as many copies as he pleases, if he will only undertake to place them in the hands of persons in any degree competent to judge in the question. He adds, however, "But why you should re"monstrate with me for not having answered a book which "I never gave you reason to suppose I intended to pass over, "it is your business, not mine to explain." The real state of the case is, however, that he had passed over the book--. B whether he then meant to take any notice of it at a future time is another question, on which people will form their opinions--but, in fact, he had passed it over, in a very peculiar manner; and the remonstrance was not so much directed against his not having answered it, as against his having "purposely avoided all mention of it." He says now, "My "reason for not so much as alluding to your second letter "was simply this. I did not like to deliver an opinion, till I "was prepared to confirm it with documentary evidence." p. 2.
