He is ready to prove that he perfectly knows his way. in the North Sea, and that in the most safe way in passing; and also, by his deep sea lead and a little grease, he could perfectly tell by the colour of the sand where he was, as well as to avoid every danger. And these things he can exercise outside of the sands with safety, but these captains cannot exercise their navigation in the inside passage, for however favourable the wind may be, they cannot tell how soon it may shift, or how soon it may blow with an increased gale to the des G truction of themselves and those who are with them. There is, therefore, no safety in the inside passage, and no danger on the outside passage on that coast. Some of the captains who have sailed in the inside passage for so many years, will be ready to say that there is as much danger in getting on sand banks on the outside, and more particularly so in thick and foggy weather. But I will answer that he has many advantages outside; and first there are different currents, not only to keep him on his voyage, if he study them properly, but also to assist and tell him the place he is in in foggy weather. If the navigator previously knows the set of those currents, he will shape his course accordingly by his compass, and consider the time of the tide, and the set of the currents themselves; so that he may, with the assistance of the deep sea lead, and the colour of the sand, know where he is to a very great degree of exactness; every one of these are great helps in hastening the voyage, as well as to the safety of the ship; whereas the navigator who is in-shore frequently, watching the light houses, and shaping his narrow course until such...
