Excerpt: ... had six times actually come to the altar, and had five times entered the holy estate of matrimony, and was, without douht, the most remarkable person who ever lived in Budleigh Salterton. And now, turning our backs on the little town, we start gaily up "Moor-lane," the first place of notice we come to being "Tidwell Barton," about one mile from Salterton, but here we must stop to recount an adventure that occurred close to this house just a month since, on the 4th of April. "We Donkeys" were taking a trial trip to get used to driving and being driven tandem. When just at this spot we " happened " on a local photographer, with all his apparatus complete. Now this gentleman, though '! born to blush unseen " in the little town of Budleigh Salterton, is a photographer of no mean merit, he having gained the silver medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1885 and the bronze medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1878 for photographs of animals. As we gaily trotted past him we exclaimed: "You had better take us." Promptly came the reply: " Certainly, if you wish; " and without more ado we drew up across the road. Now, where do "crowds" come from 1 This was the most secluded spot you can well imagine, and yet in no time there was in a gateway on one side of the road a woman and some half-dozen children; on the other side a man, two women, one perambulator and a baby, and two small boys. Also, coming down the road, a boy and a barrow, and a workman in a white jacket. However, this large assembly only waited " to see the fun," and most kindly and discreetly kept themselves out of range of the camera.
