This book is merely intended to be a guide to the opera-goer. The works, therefore, that are described in it are selected from among many of which even a brief analysis would fill a large volume. In making the selection, the author has laid aside all considerations except that of practical usefulness. If some operas of sterling merit have been omitted, it is because there is little probability of their being produced upon the English lyrical stage, or on that of any country where the English language prevails. For the same reason, those which are admittedly popular have been described at greater length than others. The selection, however, while it includes classical comic operas, such as 'II Barbiere, ' excludes those by Offenbach and his imitators, because whatever pleasure they may afford in a theatre, their libretti are usually of such a flimsy material, that no one can be expected to have the patience to read a description of their plots. For the sake of consistency, all operas NOTICE. by French composers have been treated as French operas, although in some countries they may have been produced in Italian.
