Three years after the death of Charles V., the bells of the Convent of Coria, in Trujillo, announced, with loud ringing peals, that a virgin destined to be a spouse of the Lamb without spot was about to take the veil. That virgin was Magdalena. One month had elapsed since the death of Euy Gomez de Varela, and his grandchildren faithful to their promises, were fulfilling his last wishes. Conrado, attired in court-dress of richest silk and brocade, was leading his sister by the hand, crowned with roses and dressed in white costly bridal robes. Her step was firm, and a sweet smile was on her lips. A large number of relations and friends followed them, as was due to their distinguished rank. On that day the cloister door closed for ever upon Magdalena. Conrado, faithful to his pledged word, bade his sister adieu, and went to the war, seeking his friend John. The Sultan Selim, in the year 1571, resolved to conquer the island of Chipre, which was then in the possession of the Venetians, and he took the cities of Nicossia and Famagusta. An alliance was formed between Pope Pius V., the Eepublic of Venice, and the King of Spain, Philip II., to jointly proceed against the Turks. The command of the entire squadron, consisting of 200 vessels, was entrusted to the valiant Captain Don Juan de Austria. The allied Christian fleet sighted the enemy's squadron in the Gulf of Lepanto, or Corinth, close to the island of Cephalonia. The battle was fought on the 7th of October, 1571. The allies conquered, and so completely were they victorious, that they either captured or destroyed 200 Turkish galleys; the number of dead, wounded and prisoners exceeding 25,000. The allies would have carried their efforts still farther, and occupied the Straits of Gallipolis, or Hellespont, ...
