Excerpt: ... The Elf that Stayed Behind CHARACTERS Margery, a kitchen maid. Mrs. Prinker, her cruel mistress. Maria, daughter to Mrs. Prinker and a proud damsel. Lady Primrose, a high born miss. Miss Prune, her governess. Capertoes, an elf boy. SCENE.--The lawn of Mrs. Prinker's house. At the L., a short clothes-line runs at right angles to the audience. At R. front, a bush or shrub; at R. back, a seat or bench. It is Monday morning. (As the play begins, Margery enters, R. back from the house, tugging a large basket of freshly washed clothes. She sings as she carries the basket to the front end of the clothes-line.) Margery. "This' is the way we wash our clothes, wash our clothes, wash our clothes, this is the way we wash our clothes, so early Monday morning!" And here they are, washed at last and ready to hang on the line. (Stretches her arms over head.) My, but I'm tired. But I must get to work or Mrs. Prinker will box my ears. How cross she is this morning! (She sings as she hangs the clothes.) "This is the way we hang our clothes, hang our clothes, hang our clothes, this is the way" Mrs. P. (inside). Here, you Margery, are those clothes hung yet? Margery. Not just yet, marm. Mrs. P. Well, step lively there, lazybones, or you shall have a good thrashing. Margery (nervously). Oh, dear, oh, dear, my fingers are all thumbs this morning. There! I've dropped another piece. I shall be thrashed as sure as fate. (Pause.) I wonder if I dare. (Glances right and left.) Yes, I will. I just can't take another whipping to-day. (She draws a whistle from her pocket and blows a soft blast.) Capertoes (behind bush).
