Pupils should be convinced, if necessary, that a continued best effort, leads to continual improvement. In all our work great care should be taken to avoid keeping children at work on what they already know or can do reasonably well. In spelling- pupils often spend as much time studying words "spelled as they sound" and so not likely to be mis-spelled as they spend on words containing silent letters; in arithmetic, time may be wasted on some of the fundamental operations that have been mastered when it is needed for others in which pupils are weak. One of our unsolved problems is to learn just what the individual pupil needs and how long a time he should be allowed in which to get it. In the ideal school every exercise will challenge every pupil's power, success in the contest will stimulate the desire for further conquests and every pupil will strive each day to surpass hia previous attainments.
