"Is this the little man that I am to look after?" said Mr. Gould, as the father and son stood in the porch of an old farmhouse--a house that had stood the sunshine and storms of many, many years. "Yes, sir "replied the father, cheered by the kind and hearty way in which he had been addressed. "Come in, and give me his character; and if it be a good one, I hope he wont lose it here." This was said as Mr. Gould led the way into an old-fashioned kitchen--a kitchen containing an oak table, a settle, and a clock, that appeared to be coeval with the house itself. On the hearth was burning a huge block of wood, and pointing to the settle near to the fireplace, Mr. Gould said, " Sit down, for you must not go till I and the little man become better acquainted." This was the reception the father and son met with, causing the heart of the father to leap with gladness, and leading the apprentice to think he should like his master. Mr. Gould, of Mockham Barton (for such was the name of the farm), was a remarkable man for his day. He was regarded by his fellow-farmers as very upright, but very strange, for he was a man they could not comprehend. He did not think as they thought, or do as they did; but was so perfect a contrast, that he was the subject of remark in every household. His honesty and his word none oould question, but the cause of his strange life and daily joy was a mystery none could fathom. No wonder, for North Devon at this period was darkness itself, heathen darkness, so far as spiritual light and soul-safety were concerned.
