In addition to all that depressed him, he had felt keenly that his friend and he no longer lived on the same plane; in fact, they occupied two different worlds. He felt isolated, and this increased his depression. A youth glories in fancying that he is different from the common run of his race, but a man approaching sixty suspects insanity when he finds himself seriously out of harmony with those with whom he should be in general accord. The foundations of society, morals, and religion rest so largely upon some general consensus that for a man to be lonely, and to know it, is to live under a ban of excommunication. Instead of the support of a hallowing antiquity, and of a universal brotherhood, he experiences the tormenting helplessness of an outlaw. The Bishop, therefore, called for his horse, and rode for two hours away from his palace, into country solitudes; then, turning his horse, he let him go leisurely home. When he arrived it was nearly dinner time, and oxygen had so far triumphed that he sat down in solitary state and enjoyed the good things provided. Later he read through the letters, and, though he felt stronger and saner at first, yet eventually the old depression returned, and he brooded helplessly. All became a tangle. He first thought he would go and see his Archbishop; then, again, he turned to his old hope, "Jesus, the same to-day, yesterday, and forever," and he groaned to himself: "Would that Jesus of Nazareth had been Jesus of Leeds, that all these perplexities might have been solved once and for all."
