Excerpt: ... Nov. 10th. Mrs. Touchet had a restless raving night, got no sleep at all, nor suffered any to sleep in the family, was quite frantick all ye day. I writ to her friends by ye post to fetch her away, my wife and daughters not being able to bear the disturbance by her cursing and swearing and frantick actions and expressions. Nov. 14th. Mrs. T. rested some part of the night and we thought got some sleep, but in the morning was as wild and frantick as ever. This night a chaise came to take her home. Nov. 15th. Mrs. T. had a raving night till almost morning, then lay still but we could not tell that she had any sleep. Nov. 16th. Mrs. T. had a raving fitt that lasted from nine at night till one in the morning. I got up and called ye servants to bind her faster, she being set up in bed. This morning about ten ye chaise set out with her, and she behaved better than was expected at her going off; it was unhappy for us and much more for her to be seized with this disorder in my house, but Divine wisdom orders all well, and can bring good out of this evil both to her and to us. Nov. 22nd. Much disturbed about an affair that Mr. Clegg, of Leverpool has engaged me in. I believe his intention in it is just and good, but I was afraid this might bring me into trouble and make some desperate persons my enemies. As Mr. Clegg is my friend, I desire to serve him as far as I can with a good conscience, and to commit myself to ye protection of God. Dec. 3rd. Set out for Castleton, to put an end to ye controversy between Mrs. Hall and Staveley and did finish it, blessed bo God! but not without difficulty. Dec. 14th.
