Excerpt: ... PART III. CONSTRUCTIVE CONCLUSIONS. CHAPTER I. INTRODUCTORY DEFINITIONS AND PRINCIPLES. Thus far we have given no exact definition of conscience; we have avoided this in order not to prejudice the investigation in favor of any particular theory. We find that the definitions given by the authors whose theories of conscience we have considered are generally influenced and clearly limited by the particular view of the author as to the origin and nature of conscience. Hence our definition should rather issue as the final result of the inquiry, than serve as the guide to a foregone conclusion. Further than this, the nature of conscience v forbids other than a general definition. We realize that life is infinitely richer than can be expressed in intellectual concepts, and that no definition can be at all adequate to what is essentially an inner activity and experience. But we believe that one of the fundamental characteristics of conscience is indicated by Elsenhans when he calls it "the moral consciousness in its application to the subject himself." Conscience judges and gives laws to him who has it, not to others. We may then define conscience in general and provisional terms as the consciousness of individual duty, --of personal, moral obligation. The most general moral fact is the recognition in consciousness of the difference between right and wrong and a conviction of obligation to the right and from the wrong; conscience is the appreciation of this fact. In considering the problem of the origin of conscience four important questions arise:1 1. Whether we must assume an original moral endowment as a basis for its development. 2.
