Poor reading in the upper grades is, in many cases, characterized by a persistence of short units or recognition. In the third grade the word is the longest unit of perception commonly found even in good readers In a few cases short phrases are recognized at a single fixation. The fourth grade exhibits more mature types of reading. Above this grade, records show a steadily increasing number of cases in which phrases are recognized in a single fixation. There are two kinds of silent reading: 1. Intensive study of a difficult selection during the recitation (the basal text) 2 A rapid reading of relatively easy selections (the supplementary readers) Pupils should be trained to read: 1 For the purpose of giving a coherent reproduction 2 To determine the central thought or most important ideas of a selection 3. To determine the validity of statements. A rapid reading followed by a slower, more careful reading will produce better results in a given length of time than one slow, careful reading of material' Children profit by being conscious of their rating according to some standard test SPEED DRILLS I. 1. All pupils open books at a given page and are told where to begin. 2. Then close books, keeping the place with the finger. Tell children the signals--To open books--"Start." To close--"Stop." 3. Teacher or pupil gives signal. One minute for reading. Test how far each read, first paragraph, second paragraph, etc. Question as to main thought. II. Children read a certain amount. Stand when through. On blackboard teacher writes 15 sec., 30 sec., etc. Each child notes time recorded after he stands. Question as to thought. I...
