Excerpt: ... Thus they sang, and my heart, so fond of travelling, awoke. Even at that time I was extremely wishful to travel to the North, but much was wanting, especially of that which is somewhat foolishly called 'the needful, ' although to the traveller it is indispensable. Thirty years later God gave me the pleasure, in company with my beloved wife, of taking that journey for the first time. And we liked the beautiful island and its kind, simple inhabitants so much, that we resolved to go there for the holidays of 1890 with kith and kin--and so we did. Although we were in ourselves a goodly company (my children alone numbered seven), yet many others joined us--amiable, good people, musical, and fond of singing, such as are rarely to be found. I will speak on another occasion of the serenades, on which occasions we went by water to our lovely Empress, who at that time was on a visit to Sassnitz with her five Princes. This, however, has nothing to do with my present journey, for on the 7th of August I was alone, and was willing to be alone. When we were all on board, the Rtigen went on to Gohren. This lovely watering-place is situated on Monchgut, a narrow peninsula extending eastwards far into the sea, and partially covered with forests. It is therefore as easy to land on the north side as on the south. To-day we chose the south side, as it was impossible, on account of the breakers, to effect a landing on the north. We therefore steamed in a wide curve round the point of the peninsula. Approaching the shore of the island we had a wonderful view.
