Excerpt: ... THE MOTION OF THE EARTH ROUND THE SUN. NE evening, when Mr. Watson was at Grove House, Justina remarked, that she was wondering what could have made the trees appear to dance when she was travelling in the railway cars from London, which she was sure could not have been the case, as trees could not move in the manner she then fancied. T then tried to explain to you, that it was not the sun which had gone away from your window, but that your window, or rather the globe, on which we live, had gone away from the sun. You were then surprised at my statement, and could not understand how it could be possible for the earth to move and we on the earth not feel its motion. All my explanations did not seem to satisfy your inquiring mind; but now you have given me a subject by the aid of which, I think, I shall succeed in making you understand it. You say the trees could not have been moving. The rapidity with which the cars moved made it appear as though the objects you passed were in motion. Tou will notice the same appearance when you are in a steamboat moving rapidly on a river. "So, being convinced that it was not the trees which were moving, but you in the cars, you may not be so much puzzle...
