Excerpt: ... MISSION WORK AT NIGHT. SERVICES AND MEETINGS. ORGANISATION. Incumbent should invite a few to meet him privately, as a preliminary to the actual organisation. Some present will tell him of others who he, might invite to next and larger meeting. This first gathering is just to broach the subject r to ask for the sympathy and help of those present, and to talk over the project in a general informal way. He can then take counsel as to whether it would be best to give a public notice of the next meeting, or for those present to make it known to others far and near who they think would come and help. In case of any person being annoyed at not being asked, perhaps it would be better to put a small notice on the church door, or in the parochial magazine, besides relying chiefly on the members of the first gathering inviting others. When the first regular meeting does take place, B the first question to be settled is as to whether a mission of any sort had better be held or not. In some localities an effort of this kind would do much good, in others it might be better not to attempt it. For instance, in one district the women might always have to ply their trade at a distance, and they would not stop at home till late for a midnight tea. Or it might be far better to have the mission in the adjoining parish or district. Or there might be very few, and an attempt to get'manyiwould not succeed. In this latter case one lady might be empowered, say once a week, to ask about six girls to a little supper, choosing her own helpers for the occasion. If there were very few girls in the district she might learn from them the time they would most likely come, and the proceeding would be quiet and encouraging.
