The puposes of the work with numbers in the Primary Form are to give the pupils skill in performing the four fundamental operations accurately and rapidly, and to secure neatness and facility in written work. Results, rather than reasons, are demanded. COURSE OF STUDY. 85. 1. Oral lessons with objects to teach the smaller numbers and their relations to each other. 2. Reading and writing numbers begun. 3. Teach sums of any two numbers, each less than ten, and the difference between each of these sums and each of the numbers united to form them. Extended drill on practical problems involving these sums and differences. d. Teach the Multiplication Table, at least as far as six times ten; also, the quotient of each of the products thus learned divided by each of the factors employed to produce it, using the language of fractions as well as of whole numbers. Give constant drill on practical problems involving the operations thus far indicated. 5. Teach the names and uses of the signs +, --, x, --, =, as needed, and have pupils use them in indicating the foregoing operations. 6. Teach such portions of tables of denominate numbers as mav be used in the operations indicated in i. 7. Require pupils to make and solve problems involving two or more of the operations of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Indicate operations and results by signs and symbols. Give much mental work. SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS. 86. Determine, first, what pupils know of numbers. If pupils are unable to count objects teach them to do so, employing objects of various kinds, such as beans, pegs, dots, flowers, desks, which can be pointed out, grouped and separated. Give much work of this kind on the numbers from one to ten, with many simple prac..
