Excerpt: ... the gas company to terms. Mayor Chase (Socialist) instituted an investigation that showed that the gas company was making enormous profits. The facts were presented by the mayor in a public letter to the people. This had an immediate effect. The company reduced its price from $1.40 per thousand to $1.00. But the Socialists didn't stop there. They followed the matter farther and took the case before the state board of gas commissioners. There they showed by indisputable statistics that the Haverhill Gas Company could actually manufacture and distribute gas at 37c per thousand. The commission finally awarded a decision reducing the price of gas to 80c per thousand, within 5c of the price first demanded by the Socialist mayor. This decision was finally contested by the corporation in the capitalist courts and tied up there. But enough was done to show how Socialism would relieve the people. And by the forced reduction of price from $1.40 to $1.00 per thousand the people of Haverhill were saved $18,000 every year on this one necessity alone. And had the cause of the people not been defeated by the courts they would have been saved a total of $32,000 per year. The effect of this struggle was widespread throughout the state. Other cities learned of the success of Haverhill and petitions came pouring in upon the commissioners from every part of the state.
