Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. ALDWICK. Derivation--History of Manor--Different Villas on its shore. The name is derivpd from the Saxon eald, old, and vie, a village. The place gives the name of the Hundred to the district, but that for some reason or other, was changed from Pagham, by which alone when Domesday was compiled the hundred was named. Aldwick being a constituent part of Pagham, is within the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The village is situate about a mile west of Bognor, the tything commencing at a ditch eastward of Mrs. Esdaile's near Nyewood Lane, which divides Aldwick from Bognor. It is accessible either along the shore, or by the new road made under the authority of an act of parliament. From Vic is derived Wick or Week, which gives rise to the name of many villages having that appellation, such as Rumboldaweek, or wick, or wjke. It also means a place on the sea-shore or on the bank of a river. 1 Just. f. 4 b. But it more properly signifies, in the Saxon, a street, a village, or dwelling place, and sometimes, according to the nature and condition of the place, a castle, or a town. In the Saxon Annals it is mentioned that King Athelbert made Militus, Bishop of Lunden-wic, which means Lomlonlown. Ipswich, by the Saxons, was called Vill de Gippo wico. Gipps was the name of the place and wico was the town--Gipps-town. Cawelt. The Manor of Aldwick on the death of Reginald Cardinal Pole, together with the Hundred Court of Pagham, fell into the hands of the Crown, and with other vast estates, was, in the 2nd of Elizabeth, in consideration of 52141. 9s. Id. paid into the Exchequer, granted to Sir Richard Bakere, Knight, and Richard Sackville, Esq. who in the same year, by virtue of a license of alienation, sold the manor and farm of Aldwick, (reserv...
