Having decided that the contents of the textbook will warrant a development of the course similar to one of the above outlines, we proceed to work over each chapter once more to bring out its fullest possibilities as a part of such a whole, and to make out specific assignments for class use. It is possible that the author of the textbook has had no such logical and purposive plan in mind when he wrote the book. For instance, in handling the religion of some mission field, he may have simply gathered the " principal facts," with a few observations and conclusions tacked on rather than derived. He may view the religion on the whole as a product of historical development, or as a curious example of depravity, or as a remnant of primeval revelation, or he may have no consistent point of view. If we had more than one session for the subject it might be well to consider first in a descriptive and historical way the ideas we intend to combine later, just as the first chapters of a novel may be employed in introducing the characters clearly.
