About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...Pellicer's eighteenth-century edition and the Rivadeneyra edition. 5. el. This el is doubtless the article, and not the personal pronoun el as Cortejon prints it. 6. recebia, cf. p. 22, l. 10, recebir. These are now recibia and recibir. The e is phonologically correct, for the i of recipere (or popular Latin recipire) should have given e in Spanish. Unaccented, before a following diphthong ie or id, the e might have closed to i, e.g., recebid recibid, recebieron recibieron. A spreading of the i from these and similar forms, and an influence of the Latin spelling may explain the modern forms, which, moreover, appear sometimes here. Page 22.--i. eran. Bowie amended to era, but we really have here a case of attraction of the verb by a word which is logically its predicate. 2. hubo de decil=dijo. In earlier Spanish, and down through the classic period of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as, e.g., in the ballads, this construction of the preterite indicative of haber+de+an infinitive was used, not infrequently, as equivalent to the preterite indicative of the verb in the infinitive. 3. mafiana, en aquel dia, i.e., "on the very morrow," or, "to-morrow during the day." The expression is easily paralleled in Old Spanish (cf. en aquel dia de eras, "Poema del Cid," ed. of Menendez-Pidal, v. 676) and in the ballads (cf. For manana en aquel dia, in the ballad of the Conde Alarcos) and the drama (cf. ayer, en aquel dia, in the Verdad sospechosa of Ruiz de Alarcon, II, xiii). Page 23.--i. ansimismo. The n is here intrusive as in the French ainsi, if the source is Latin aeque (or rather ac)+sic. Asi and asimismo seem to be the earliest Old Spanish forms; the - appeared later, only to disappear again in the modern forms. Cf. asimismo, p. 24, l. 20....
