About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893. Excerpt: ... 148 ESCORTS OF CONVOYS by placing a pick in either end ami turning in opposite directions. General Sherman's method of tearing up a track is to deploy a line of men on one side of the track, one or two men grasping each end of a sleeper, and by a word of command the whole line lifts together, and easily throws the track over. To destroy the line, instruments are removed, batteries and insulators destroyed, and numerous poles cut down and burned. Should iron poles be encountered they may be pulled down by throwing a noosed rope over the top. If there are two or more wires on a pole, confusion and a troublesome delay may be caused by forming a neat "contact," that is connecting the two wires by a small wire, or binding them together in the same manner. Underground wires being hard to find take more time and experience to destroy. Trenches should be dug perpendicular to the direction of the line. If the line is found it can be dug up, or pulled out so that a piece may he removed. The, trenches should be rilled up again if time permits so that the enemy will experience difficulty in finding the cause and place of damage. ESCORTS OF CONVOYS A convoy is any means of transportation used in connection with an army in the field, which is not under the immediate protection of the army itself. The term convoy is also applied to a body of prisoners being escorted from one locality to another. Conyoys by land may consist of pack trains, wagou trains or railway trains. By water they may be composed of boats propelled by steam, wind or horse power. WAGON TRAINS 149 The escor...
