Extrait: Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty (Barnaby Rudge, conte des emeutes de quatre-vingt), habituellement connu sous le titre de Barnaby Rudge, est un roman historique de Charles Dickens (1812-1870, publie par Chapman and Hall en quatre-vingt huit feuilletons hebdomadaires de fevrier a novembre 1841 dans l'ephemere revue Master Humphrey's Clock (- La Pendule de Maitre Humphrey -) (1840-1841). L'action du roman est d'ordre a la fois prive et public, puisqu'elle concerne un ancien meurtre perpetre dans une petite ville non loin de Londres, sur quoi se greffent les emeutes anti-catholiques dites Gordon Riots, conduites par Lord George Gordon, qui, du 2 au 10 juin 1780 a Londres, ont provoque de tres importants degats et fait de nombreuses victimes. D'abord concu en 1836 sous le titre Gabriel Varden, The Locksmith of London (- Gabriel Varden, serrurier a Londres -) et destine a Richard Bentley du Bentley's Miscellany pour etre sa premiere grande uvre romanesque, puis longtemps retarde par divers demeles avec les editeurs, Barnaby Rudge est le septieme roman publie par Charles Dickens. A l'origine prevu sous la forme d'un three-decker (- un trois ponts -), soit en trois volumes, il est finalement ramasse en un seul par Chapman & Hall. C'est aussi son premier essai dans le genre historique, le second etant Le Conte de deux cites (A Tale of Two Cities), publie en 1859 et situe au temps de la Revolution francaise. La premiere edition a ete illustree par George Cattermole et Hablot K(night) Browne, dit Phiz. D'apres Gordon Spence, c'est l' uvre d'un homme jeune...
