About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1915. Excerpt: ... NINETY-FOUR AND THE ALUMNI FUND. The attitude of the majority of the Class towards the Alumni Fund during the past few years has been one of kindly but detached interest, very much as an undergraduate with a 2.10 stand and no prospects of betterment gazes upon Phi Beta Kappa. They have wished it well--and hoped others would subscribe. Others have--66 in 1910, 68 in 1911, 73 in 1912, 84 in 1913, 80 in 1914, an almost continuous record of progress. I wonder if the non-contributors realize the significance of the Fund and the part it plays in the difficult problems of Yale finances. Let me present very briefly a few facts, drawn largely from an address of the University Secretary. In 1832 President Jeremiah Day stated that the entire annual income of the College, independent of the term bills, scarcely exceeded $2,000.00. Twenty years later President Woolsey pointed out that the total University budget was $23,000. In 1913 it was over $1,500,000.00 This growth, stupendous as it is, has scarcely kept pace with the expanding needs of the work, and the Alumni Fund was started about tw...
