Not illustrated. 1811 Excerpt: ...but he himself must frequently visit the sentries, give them the necessary instructions, and inform himself of the exact situation of his own post and those near him. He should attentively observe the nature of the ground, so as in any event to take the advantage of it. As a further security, all detached guards must fend out patrols, more or less strong to reconnoitre the ground in front and on the flanks, particularly in the night; some to visit the roads, others the chain of sentries, to fee that they are watchful. Patrols which are to visit the sentries, should consist of a noncommissioned officer and sour men. The non-commiflioned officer puts himself at their head; the men following at the distance of twenty or thirty paces, in order to be ready to support him in case oi'necesiity. When the leader of the patrol approaches asentry, the lattcrchallengeshim.and on the former answering Patrol! the countersign will be demanded hy the sentry. No person, however, should approach nearer to a sentry than eight or ten paces, and the countersign ffinuld not be given louder than is necessary for the sentry to hear, for fear of an enemy or spy, who may have concealed himself near his post. A patrol which is to reconnoitre io front of the chain of sentries, -my consist of the fame number, but inarch in different order.
