It is not to be wondered at, that such a people were incapable of freedom. Dryden's translation preserves the force of the original: Clients of old were feasted; now a poor Divided dole is dealt at th' outward door; Which by the hungry rout is soon dispatch'd; The paltry largess too severely watch'd Ere given; and every face observ'd with care, That no intruding guest usurp a share.
