Excerpt: ... APPENDIX XXII. Surprise And Capture Of The Forts And Town Of "weymouth, And Siege Of Melcombe Regis. Very little seems to be generally known, even at the place itself, about this brief but very stirring episode of the Civil War, to which Wiseman makes several allusions in his treatises,1 yet without this knowledge Wiseman's references to it can hardly be understood. The incidents of the attack and defence of Weymouth and Melcombe excited very considerable interest at the time the events occurred, owing particularly to the varying fortunes which attended the troops engaged in the struggle. There exists among the King's Pamphlets in the Library of the British Museum an extremely rare tract of eight small quarto pages, in which an account of the circumstances of the assault and capture of Weymouth by the Royalists, and its subsequent recovery by the Parliamentarians, has been published by an eyewitness.2 The description given in this pamphlet explains the brief allusions to the event made by Wiseman, and it is chiefly from this narration that I have derived the following particulars. At the time--February, 1644-5--the occurrences alluded to above took place, Portland was held by a small Royalist 1 See pages 46 and 128.
