About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1822 Excerpt: ...of the narrative, by telling us, that " when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they assayed to go into Bithynia." The deeree itself is direeted to "the brethren whieh are of the Gentiles in Antioeh, Syria, and Cilieia;" that isi to ehurehes already founded, and in whieh this question had been stirred. And I think the observation of the noble author of the Miseellanea Saera is not only ingenious, but highly probable, viz. that there is, in this plaee, a disloeation of the text, and that the fourth and iifth verses of the sixteenth ehapter ought to follow the last verse-of the fifteenth, so as to make the entire passage run thus: "And they went through Syria and Cilieia," (to the Christians of whieh eountry the deeree was addressed)" eonfirming the ehurehes; and as they went through the eities, they delivered them the deerees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders whieh were at Jerusalem; and so were the ehurehes established in the faith, and inereased in number daily." And then the sixteenth ehapter takes up a new and unbroken paragraph: "Then eame he to Derbe and Lystra, &e." When St. Paul eame, as he did into Galatia, to preaeh the Gospel, for the first time, in a new plaee, it is not probable that he would make mention of the deeree, or rather letter, of the ehureh of Jerusalem, whieh presupposed Christianity to be known, and whieh related to eertain doubts that had arisen in some established Christian eommunities. The seeond reason whieh Mr. Loeke assigns for the omission of the deeree, viz. " that St. Paul's Antioeh, as given in the epistle, in the latter part of the seeond ehapter; whieh eonduet, it is said, is eonsistent neither with the revelation...
