Excerpt: ... CHAPTER SEVEN Fourteen-Inch Mounts, Ammunition Hoists, Rammers, Etc. . RAMMER 12-INCH, MARK VIII. The rammer beam is of steel, cast in two pieces, the first section is flanged at one end and bolts to the rear of the apron of the slide, its other end is fitted with two sockets for dowels of the section to fit into it. The second section has two dowels that fit into the sockets of the first, and are held in by wedge-shaped oval pins that go.through the beams. The dowels are held in at their small end by linked shaped washers under porcupine nuts and cotter pins. On the outboard side of the beam is secured a platform which is fitted with a hand rail. The upper end of the beam curves upward and is here fitted with a socket for the ball of the ball and socket joint which holds the rammer head casing to it. On the beam between this and the platform is a car stop, which is fitted with a spring buffer; this stops the car from raising at the rear end when the shell is being loaded. The rammer guide plate or slide is made of steel and secured to the loading platform and turret pan by bolts. It is curved so as to keep the sprocket wheel casing an equal distance from the breech at any angle of loading. The sprocket wheel casing is a. bronze casting, flanged to the guide plate and contains a sprocket wheel and gear, which operates the rammer-and chain, and is connected to the rammer beam on the lower side of the ball and socket joint. It has the upper end of the lower chain casing-made fast to its lower side and has on its side a hydraulic spring buffer which takes up the shock of the return of the rammer head to the casing!
