The whole amount of the author's doctrine on this fundamental article seems to turn out to this, That Christ "was the first and greatest of that illustrious band who died for the truth: --That his sufferings, in general, were more bitter than theirs, and his behaviour under "them more noble and persect;--and finally, that though they might be, in some instances, mistaken in what "they professed, it is scarcely conceivable that he could "be so-j-.'.i. One would think indeed, that in many places he means to grant the atonement; particularly, when he says, " Hadi "there been no fin, there would have been no need of a Saviour; no Saviour at least to suffer and die.. It was not only by means of sin that Christ suffered, but on account of the sins of men ." Sed latet anguu in herba. There is'a coil of the old serpent here. Although Christ died "on account of the sins of men," yet you must not conclude, my brethren, that he died as a real propitiatory sacrifice. "For (adds he there may be iuffering where there is no guilt, and consequently no punishment uv "tended." Christ might, with him, be said to die " on account of the sins of men;" but he did not really die for their sins, nor in their place, for " he had no guilt," that is, no imputation of sin, no liablenefs to vindictive justice as a Surety; he was not " made a curse for us," he was not substituted in our law room. Therefore, however much he suffered, having no guilt, " consequently ther$ could be no punishment intended."
