CHAPTER XIX HOW, AND WHY, EVIL WAS INTRODUCED UPON THE EARTH The widow is defrauded: the orphan is oppressed: the weak are driven to the wall: the evil-doer flourisheth "like the green bay tree." How is this? Is it indeed the Almighty who guides and directs all these things? If not how is it that they occur? These are questions that I do not think I go too far when I say, assail the mind of every man. It has been my desire in the foregoing pages, to trace the nature of the various evils that assail the race of man, and the origin of evil in the human mind. Had the plan of the Almighty been to prevent evil by continual intervention in the affairs of earth, it is obvious that entirely different machinery would have been erected, from that which has actually been set up. Or in such circumstances, possibly no machinery would have been required. All the conduct and acts of men would in such case have been guided from the outside, and by an unseen hand, and not by the man himself; and the conduct would not have been the conduct of the man, but that of his Creator. It is plain however, that no such plan as this entered into the design of the Creator. The design adopted by Him on the contrary, evidently was to construct man in the manner which He judged best for him, and so to place him, that he could put to use all the functions and capacities with which he was endowed. I cannot see how it is possible that this plan can strike any one with surprise. Any departure from it in fact, must have reduced man to the condition of a mere puppet. It is clear however that man is no puppet, but in all that he does obeys and carries into operation the faculties and functions that were planted within him.
