About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1885. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... A SHEAF OF PARABLES. THUS it has been attempted to bring together some illustrations of these two great departments of folk-lore--the Proverb and the Parable. An amazing wealth remains behind, even in the poor exchequer of the Compiler. He talked of grass, and wind, and rain, And fig-trees, and fair weather, And made it His delight to bring Heaven and earth together. "He spoke of lilies, vines, and corn, The sparrow and the raven; And words so natural yet so wise, Were on men's hearts engraven. And yeast, and bread, and flax, and cloth, And eggs, and fish, and candles; See how the whole familiar world He most divinely handles." Thus, from ancient and modern sources, from the "Gesta Romanci' rum" and the tales of Caesar of Heisterbach down to the modern novel, we have strung, not altogether at random, the parables of the ages. * "Lamps, Pitchers, and Trumpets: Lectures on the Vocation of the Preacher." By Edwin Paxton Hood, 1867. Lecture VIII.: The Use and Abuse of Imagination and Illustration. PARABLES. 533 Even to gather the parables which have been spoken thr...
