For directions as to the proper functions and use of dictation as an exercise in composition, the reader is referred to the discussion of the subject in a previous chapter (pp. 55-56). The selections here offered have been used by teachers in the grades to which they are assigned. An effort has been made to secure material that has content, material that possesses either informational, or literary, or ethical value. In order to impress certain language forms upon the mind of the child, exercises are sometimes chosen whose subject-matter is trivial and uninteresting. The same objects of formal instruction may be accomplished by the use of material which has intrinsic value. For the lower grades many of the sentences here offered are taken from the poems usually memorized in grades below. They are consequently half-forgotten lines which the children will be glad to meet again, for they are old friends. The teacher need not confine herself to the selections here offered in any grade. If she have material of equal or greater intrinsic merit that answers her purpose she should be encouraged to use that. In such a case the literature offered in this book will serve merely as a standard of excel 129 lence and a model of the kind and difficulty of exercises to be used. Attention is called" again (see p. 56) to the folly of copying dictation exercises after the pupil has corrected his errors. In a certain city this practice was once insisted upon by the authorities, and it is still in vogue in some schools. Copying is the simplest and easiest form of written composition.
