In the midst of a choiring group Which headed the turmoil tempestuous, Singing shreds of a psalm of David Strode their preacher bare-headed, With visage all shining adoration, As he presented a Bible to Lincoln Who rose to receive his visitors, And gave ear to their dialect rude, Which pulsed the full heart of the speaker, While he told the story ever repeated How the Israelites under Moses, Their leader miracle-working, Escaped from the bondage of Egypt Through the Red Sea and the Desert To the promised land of their people Flowing with milk and honey and freedom. So spake the resounding orator With many responsive refrains, From the throng of heads all ringleted And bubbling over with strong amens Reverberating up to the welkin.
