Excerpt: ... mop'ylae, rendered highly interesting by the brave resistance made by Leon'idas, the Spartan king, and his few resolute followers, against the myriads of Persia. 25. VI.--Doris, or Dor'ica, a very small state at the foot of Mount CE'ta, containing only four towns of little importance. 26. VII.--iEto'lia, extending from the Gulf of Naupac'tus (now Lepan'to) to the river Achelo'us. Its chief towns were Cal'ydon, famous as the birth-place of Diome'de, Melea'ger, and Dejani'ra, the wife of Hercules; Chalcis, on the Ionian Sea; and Naupac'tus, on the north-west extremity of the Corinthian Gulf, though by some it is placed atLocris. North of Thermopylae, at the foot of Mount CE'ta, stood Heracle'a, so named from Hercules, who cast himself into a burning pile on the top of Mount CEta, adjoining. Opposite the northern point of Euboe'a, stood Pag'asae, the port of Phe'rae, the capital of the tyrant Alexander, whom Pelop'idas conquered. Twenty stadia from Pag'asae stood Iol'cos, the city of Pe'lius and Jason; and near Iol'cos was Deme'trias, built by Deme'trius Poliocer'tes. To the north of the province and promontor...
