Excerpt: ... from Novalis: "There is but one temple in the universe, and that is the Body of Man; nothing is holier than that high form. Bending before men is a reverence done to this revelation in the flesh. We touch heaven when we lay our hand on a human body." "This sounds," says Carlyle, "much like a mere flourish of rhetoric, but it is not so. "But how often," he says, "while the body stands so broad and brawny the soul lies blinded, dwarfed, stupefied, almost annihilated, for the want of knowledge." So that the man is too often but like a patent digester of so much animal and vegetable food; whose thoughts never soar higher than a hot dinner on Sundays, or a pipe and pot in the tap-room at night. One could verily weep at such pictures of stagnant power, undeveloped excellence, imbruted virtue, and stifled genius. "That one man should die ignorant, who had capacity for knowledge," this he calls, "a tragedy; but what," he adds, "if it were to happen more than twenty times in the minute, as by some computations it does." In Carlyle's wit and humour there are many peculiar characteristics. His wit is of a heavy, thumping kind, ...
