Excerpt: ... A SERIES OF ADVENTURES, &c IN THE YEAR M.DCC.LXXVII, IN LETTERS TO A LADY. LETTER IT. MADAM, . TO prove as good as one's word is the province of every honest man, but more particularly will it be expected where inclination and duty go hand-in-hand. Whatever may be the fate of my former letter, the specious name of honor will insure the performance of my promise, and lead me into error under a mistaken notion of things. The man of honor submits his better judgment to the opinion of the multitude, and sacrifices his friend's life, or his own, to extend his reputation. In. like manner the author is betrayed by the secret impulses of vanity, and is so tenacious of the empty applauses of the croud, as to be still risking what little fame he may have acquired, in the pursuit of more. But you, Madam, have to answer for this transgression, and, though innocent of the intention, are unhappily the Cause of a poor author adding to the number of hisfins. There is doubtless matter enough in the pages which he has the honor to submit to your perusal; but in respect to the manner, he only wishes that he was possessed of your talent to excuse it to the world.
