Excerpt: ... Nothing is more easy than to make theories on subjects of which every body is ignorant, and that very facility has all along been the bane of science. The subject is curious, however; and, as it might elicit something important in the art of producing colours and rendering them permanent, it is worthy of investigation--the more so that beautiful colour pleases a greater number than any other kind of beauty, inasmuch as it is felt without thought. Section IV.--Functions Of Individual Organs. From the extent at which the general process of vegetation in a tree has been considered, and the reference which has been made to all the parts of that which are concerned in the making of additions to its own structure, the present section may be confined within very narrow limits. The functions of the root, the trunk, the buds, and the leaves, have been already noticed; and thus the chief subjects that remain are the flowers, from their appearance in the bud to the maturing of the seeds, which is the ultimate object in that part of the vegetable economy. Flowers are the most beautiful objects in nature, and they are never deceiving; for if the flower is beautiful, and at the same time fragrant, we may expect little deleterious in the plant: on the other hand, if the flower be offensive to the eye, and more so if it be ungrateful to the smell, caution is required; and, however tempting any part of the plant may FLOWERS. 203 seem, it should not be eaten in the raw state. The forms, colours, scents, and savours of flowers are so varied, that they cannot be treated in a general manner, so as to furnish any thing like knowledge. The petals of flowers, which come forward in an envelope of bractece, or in the calyx, are always more or less green, have the tint of the young...
