MY DEAR CHARLES, The man of learning possesses a fund by means of which he can supply his necessities in those difficult emergencies whose arrival ignorance fearfully anticipates, and whose actual occurrence overwhelms it with perplexity and despair. The man of system and regularity is the best economist of his abilities, making them more productive than richer talents dissipated and encumbered by fickleness and confusion; but in the absence of moral principle, the treasures of knowledge may be but the instruments of successful wickedness, and dexterity in using them will only ensure their pernicious aim. Though I am desirous that you should be both a profound and a precise lawyer, and have therefore been induced to write (with much diffidence) the preceding letters; yet I am far more anxious that rectitude should characterize your progress, rendering your endowments, your acquirements, and your skill, the unadulterated sources of sublime enjoyment to yourself, and unquestionable benefit to others. It is a notorious fact, which an honest mind cannot reflect upon without pain and regret, an impartial observer cannot witness without detestation and disgust, and a too credulous client can scarcely experience without anger and chagrin, that not a few of those whose peculiar province it is to protect or recover the rights, and redress the wrongs of their fellows, are busily employed in rousing animosities which would otherwise soon have slumbered and expired, in fomenting differences they ought to appease, magnifying injuries they should palliate, instigating to revenge when they might mediate a reconciliation, prosecuting unequitable claims, defending palpable injustice, ne...
