About the Book

Digital signal processing lies at the heart of the communications revolution and is an essential element of key technologies such as mobile phones and the Internet. This book covers all the major topics in digital signal processing (DSP) design and analysis, supported by MatLab examples and other modelling techniques. The authors explain clearly and concisely why and how to use digital signal processing systems; how to approximate a desired transfer function characteristic using polynomials and ratio of polynomials; why an appropriate mapping of a transfer function on to a suitable structure is important for practical applications; and how to analyse, represent and explore the trade-off between time and frequency representation of signals. An ideal textbook for students, it will also be a useful reference for engineers working on the development of signal processing systems.

Table of Contents:
Preface; Introduction; 1. Discrete-time systems; 2. The z and Fourier transforms; 3. Discrete transforms; 4. Digital filters; 5. FIR filter approximations; 6. IIR filter approximations; 7. Finite precision effects; 8. Multirate systems; 9. Filter banks and wavelets; 10. Efficient FIR structures; 11. Efficient IIR structures; 12. Implementation of DSP systems; References; Index.

About the Author :
Paulo S. R. Diniz was born in Niterói, Brazil. He received the Electronics Engineer degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1978, the MSc degree from COPPE/UFRJ in 1981, and the PhD from Concordia University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, in 1984, all in electrical engineering. Since 1979, he has been with the undergraduate Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the UFRJ. He has also been with the graduate Program of Electrical Engineering at COPPE/UFRJ since 1984, where he is presently a Professor. He has also served as undergraduate course coordinator and as chairman of the graduate department. From January 1991 to July 1992, he was a visiting Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2002 he served as Melchor Endowment Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Notre Dame, USA. He has taught short courses at numerous institutions around the world. His teaching and research interests are in analog and digital signal processing, adaptive signal processing, digital communications, wireless communications, multirate systems, stochastic processes and electronic circuits. He has published over 250 refereed papers in some of these areas, has written two books and has received awards for best papers and technical achievements. He is also a Fellow of IEEE (for fundamental contributions to the design and implementation of fixed and adaptive filters and electrical engineering education) and has served as associate editor for the following journals: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing (1996–1999), IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (1999–2002) and Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing (1998–2002). He was a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for the years 2000 to 2001 and served as distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004. Eduardo A. B. da Silva received his Engineering degree in Electronics from Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), Brazil, in 1984, his M.Sc. degree in Electronics from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ) in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Electronics from the University of Essex, England, in 1995. Eduardo is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics (DEL/UFRJ) and (PEE/COPPE/UFRJ). His research interests lie in the fields of signal processing and image coding, especially wavelet transform coding, lattice vector quantization and subjective assessment of images. Dr da Silva is a member of the IEEE. Sergio L. Netto received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1991, his M.Sc. from COPPE/UFRJ in 1992, and his Ph.D. from the University of Victoria, BC, Canada, in 1996. Since 1997, Dr Netto has been an Associate Professor at the undergraduate Department of Electronics/School of Engineering at UFRJ. His research interests are in IIR adaptive signal processing and digital filter design.

Review :
'This textbook covers, clearly and concisely, the core material of a DSP course … it is suitable as the main text for an undergraduate DSP course or for a short course for practising engineers.' The Times Higher Education Supplement 'This well written textbook presents the basic mathematical methods in digital signal processing … altogether, this is a useful textbook for students in electrical engineering and a convenient reference for researchers working on digital signal processing.'
