About the Book

Consistent with NCTM standards, this book employs an investigative approach to elementary mathematics instruction. This philosophy is based on three central tenets: 1) making mathematics relevant to the everyday lives of children 2) making it problem-base or inquiry-based and 3) making it understandable and meaningful. A wealth of probes and investigations in the text and accompanying website provide an understanding of mathematical content, the psychology of mathematical learning, and the latest, research-based teaching methods. In addition to general updating, changes in the new edition include simplifying the format, an increased focus on big (connective) ideas and new material on the design and use of scoring rubrics. New to this edition is an instructor website containing for each chapter: objective questions with answer keys, additional probes and investigations, writing assignments, and video clips illustrating the use of the investigative approach and related probes and investigations. Sales Points: Investigative Approach – The book employs a unique format in which readers interact with the text materials through a series of probes and investigations that promote the exploration of key ideas about elementary mathematics, children’s mathematical learning, and mathematics teaching. Instructors can choose from over 75 probes and investigations to create opportunities for collaborative small group problem solving, structured discovery learning, or whole-class discussions. Probes and Investigations – These are based on challenging and engaging mathematical problems, questions arising from science and other content areas, or real-life tasks of various kinds. All of the investigations and most of the probes are suitable for instruction of elementary school students. NCTM Standards – The text covers the full range of topics the NCTM now recommends be taught in the elementary grades including whole number concepts and skills, number theory, rational numbers, ratios and proportions, statistics and probabllity, geometry and measurement, and algebra and functions. Website – An accompanying website will include additional coverage of mathematical content, the psychology of mathematical learning, and pedagogical recommendations and activities. It will also include reference material such as tips on technology, assessment items (objective-style questions, writing/journal assignments, mathematical problems and exercises involving scoring rubrics) and teaching tips for the probes and investigations.
