Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...the spring. Owing to the laxative properties of succulent grass, many dairymen prefer raising their calves in the fall or winter. While on pasture the calves need good water and shelter to protect them from the hot sun and flies. RAISING CALVES ON WHEY Whey contains only 5l/2 to 6 per cent of solids, or approximately two-thirds the amount in skim-milk. When sweet, clean, and uncontaminated, it may be used as a feed for calves in place of skim-milk if the same methods of feeding are used. Calves raised on whey will not make as large gains or be as sleek and fat as those fed on skim-milk. As whey is rather low in feeding value, it should be given very carefully and supplemented with a good mixture of grains and fine, bright hay. Cheese factories frequently produce whey that has such a wide range of acidity and is so badly contaminated that it causes indigestion and may carry infectious diseases. Tn such cases the whey should not be used but the calves should be raised on other feeds. RAISING CALVES ON MILK SUBSTITUTES On farms where whole milk is sold it is readily recognized that calves can not be fed economically on whole milk over a long period. If the calves are to be raised by hand they are usually fed upon milk substitutes after the first few weeks, or a small quantity of milk is separated to furnish skim-milk until they are three months old or over, when they are put on a hay and grain ration. Though milk substitutes give fair results when fed with great care, they are not equal to skim-milk in feeding value. The commercial calf meals or milk substitutes found on the market will give fair results, but they are usually very expensive.
