Fill a greasy oil-bottle with warm water and shake it well. Notwithstanding this, the grease is not removed from the sides of the bottle. Next add a few small pieces of soda; shake the bottle again, and notice that this time water, soda, dirt, and grease have all mixed together, proving that soda dissolves grease. Experiment (2). Half fill a large test-tube with oil; make a strong soda solution and add it to the oil. Shake the tube well so as to mix together oil and soda. Shortly a change will be observed in the contents. The soda splits up the oil into two parts, uniting with one to form a new substance which rises to the top of the tube, and setting free the other part which sinks to the bottom. If you rub a little of the new substance between your fingers you will recognize that it is soap. It must be boiled to make it hard. Soap is made on a large scale in much the same way. Waste fats are put into vats, melted and boiled, and mixed by degrees with a solution of soda called the lye. Boiling is continued until the fatty acids have united with the soda to form soap. The liquid which remains is called glycerine. Kinds of Soap. Yellow Soap owes its character to the resin which is boiled with it. Mottled Soap derives its blue streaks from impurities in the materials used in its manufacture. It is used for washing clothes and for cleaning. Soft Soap is made from fish oils or linseed oil, and potash. White or Curd Soap owes its pure colour to the fact that it is not stirred while boiling, and the impurities sink to the bottom with the glycerine. Fancy Toilet Soaps are made from curd soap.
