Now suppose AB very small, and a large number of such small projections to exist on the plane. Each will exert a tendency to stop the wheel similar to AB, and their combined effect will in time completely stop it. Such a plane is said to be rough, and the sum total of all the small taps, or small impulsive forces from all these small obstacles, is what is called the force of friction. Next, let a rectangular block slide along a smooth horizontal plane, in the direction of the arrow under the action of a force parallel to the plane pulling it along, and hit an obstacle AB. There are three forces acting on the block--1. Its weight acting vertically down through its mass centre. 2. The pulling force acting parallel to the plane. 3. Some backward force from the obstacle opposing motion. The forces (1) and (2) will meet at some point O. Therefore the third force from the obstacle will pass through 0. Now suppose AB is very small, and a large number of such very small projections to exist on the plane. Each will exert a tendency to stop the motion, and the sum total of all the taps is called the force of friction, and the plane on which they exist is said to be rough. Of course, the smoother the surface the smaller and less effective are the obstacles to stop the motion, and therefore the longer will the wheel and block travel; and, theoretically, if the surfaces were perfectly smooth, i.e. no obstacles exi...
