In this fight, Sher-man stood near the reb-el works, hid by a rise of ground; but in the great fire his men-itefeL.-mi'i fell back and laid down back of the spurs of ground, as close on the rebel works as they could. Grant came here on foot, and Sher-man said to him, "My at-tack has failed." Grant said, " It is the same with Mc Pher-son and Mc Cler-nand." While he stood there a note came from Mc Cler-nand, which said that he had gained the reb-el breast-work in his front, and that "the flag of the U-ni-on waved on the strong-hold of Vicks-burg." Grant said SHER-MAN NEAR THE FRONT. he had no faith in it, but Sher-man thought he would write the truth, and asked leave to at-tack the reb-els at once with new troops. Grant said he would ride down the line to Mc Cler-nand's front, and if no word came back to Sher-man by 3 o'clock, he might make the attack.
