The farm may be acquired by purchase from individuals (railroad and other corporations are included in 1jhe term), or if what is known as government lands (i. e., public lands of the United States), by homestead. No public lands of the United States are now sold at public sale, except certain military reservations, mineral lands, and tracts of land that have been subject to homestead entry for three or more years after the surrounding lands have been disposed of. Any person who is the head of a family or is over twentyone years of age, being a citizen of the United States, or who has declared his or her intention to become such, can enter 160 acres of public land by making actual residence and cultivating the same for five years consecutively and by paying the land office fees as provided by law (if an honorably discharged soldier or sailor of the war of the Rebellion, the time of service in the army or navy will be deducted), or after fourteen months' actual residence may commute the entry by paying the government price, which is $1.25 an acre for minimum lands and $2.50 an acre for double minimum lands. Double minimum landsi are those alternate sections reserved in railroad grants. Indian reservations restored to the public domain are rated differently, in some cases higher and in others lower, than minimum and double minimum lands. Previous to the organization of the government of the United States the land in the thirteen original states was surveyed in accordance with European methods, and descriptions were by metes and bounds; as from a certain natural object to another, giving the directions and distances, or taking some stream or ridge as a boundary.
