Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: ...1 The magnetism acquired from the earth's inductive influence while the ship is being built, and rendered permanent by the process of hammering, etc., and which remains after she is launched although it undergoes a considerable reduction, especially when she proceeds to sea, or is subjected to concussion with her head in a different direction to that in which she was built. The position of the poles depends on the direction of her head while building. The red subpermanent pole is that part of the ship nearest the blue or north magnetic pole of the earth while building, and the blue sub-permanent pole that part of the ship farthest away from the north. It is called sub-permanent magnetism because of it not altogether disappearing after she is launched, and also to distinguish it from magnetised steel bars. (Art. 24). 24. Co-efficient A represents a deviation which is constant in name The term sub-permanent magnetism in these questions is used in the original sense as proposed by the late Sir G. B. Airy, to denote the character of the permanent magnetism of an iron ship as distinguished from the permanent magnetism of a magnetised steel bar.
