Not illustrated. 1895 Excerpt: ...in 1840, so great had been the progress of the State, it produced a larger quantity of corn than any other in the Union. Nor was it lacking in those industrial enterprises that establish the character of a progressive and prosperous people. As early as 1810 it was known as an iron-producing State, second only to Pennsylvania. The cannon balls that were sent hurtling through the British ranks at New Orleans were molded in Dickson Couuty, of Tennessee iron. The most active commerce of the Mississippi Valley found its center at Nashville. Politically the State was regarded as the most influential in the South, irnderthe leadership of such men as Jackson, Hugh L. White, Emerson, Houston, Bell, Polk, Johnson, Jones, Zollicoft'er, Cave Johnson, Heury, Hay ties, Gentry, Aaron V. Brown, Haskell, Neil S. Brown, and-others its reputation for statesmanship and oratory reached the furthest couliues of civilization. To celebrate the virtues of our great men; to honor those who hewed out homes from the wilderness and drove back the savages; to keep in remembrance those who built up our manufactories, is surely a high duty devolving upon the present generation, and all good men, proud of the history of Tennessee, are lending their best influences to the undertaking. It is proposed, first of nil, to collect the scattered facts and traditions that go to illustrate our past history; to bring to the knowledge of the present generation the hardships and the spirit of endurance that characterized our forefathers--how they lived, what sort of houses they occupied, the kiu.d of food they ate, and the character of the clothes they wore, these being for the most part the products of their own domestic spinning wheels and haudiooms.
